A Shemology of II Samuel 5:13-16
By Pastor Alan Ronk & Rev. B. Di Gilio
Some time ago, I was sent a Shemology from a Pastor living in Bamberg, Germany. I would like to share with you what he sent to me, as well as the insights that I have added to his with his permission.
To start off with, let me share the email Pastor Alan sent me, which by the way, was so strange. Parts of his email came to me in Hebrew. Now Alan did not send it to me in Hebrew, but in a transliteration of "Hebrew". I do not have anything in my Netscape browser by which to make Hebrew appear on my screen. So how it got in my email we do not know! It had to be the Divine Hand of God. I highlighted the Hebrew text in the email, and copied it from my Netscape, into my Microsoft Word, and this is what is says:
"from the Heb. root Shamem; translated "desolate" 49 times... from Heb. root Shuwb; translated "return" 391 x; and "again" 248 x..."
It was like God was saying to me, 'take a good look at this Shemology, a really good long look at it!' So I did. Let me start with Alan's email in English:
[ Shalom Sister Barbara: Here is another Shemology passage I just worked out today. It is found in Shmuel b. In verses 13 through 16 we have the names of 11 sons born to David in Yerushalayim. Their names in order are as follows:
1. Shammuah - from the Heb. root Shamem; translated "desolate" 49 times
2. Shobab - from Heb. root Shuwb; translated "return" 391 x; and "again" 248 x.
3. Nathan - "Giver". Its root is translated "give"1078 x
4. Solomon - "Peace". from the Heb. root "Shalom"
5. Ibhar - from a Heb. root bachar, which is translated "choose" 77 x; "chosen" 77 x; "choice" 6 x.
6. Elishua - "God is Salvation"
7. Nepheg - Sprout, bud, shoot, spring forth
8. Japhia - from a Heb. root meaning shine, shine forth, enlighten
9. Elishama - "God has heard"
10. Eliada - God knows or God has acknowledged
11. Eliphalet - "God Delivers"
The message we could derive from this is:
"The Desolate shall Return Again to the Giver of Peace and Choose God's Salvation. It shall Spring Forth and Enlighten them. For God Has Heard, God has Acknowledged, and God Will Deliver". (Words in italics are mine) AR
Intriguing is the fact that this message of Salvation / Restoration ends with three "Eli's". "God Has Heard" could represent the Father (the Father who hears our prayers); "God Knows" could represent the Ruach HaKodesh (I Corinthians 2:10-11); and "God Delivers" could represent the One who delivered us from sin, Yeshua HaMashiach.
What do you think my friend???
Your Brother in Yeshua,
Alan]
Reading Alan's dynamite email letter started me thinking about David's four sons by Bathsheba (daughter of an oath - daughter of abundant crying). I remembered that the son who's name is Shammuah, is also called by the name of Shimea in I Chron. 3:5.
In I Chron. 3:5 we read:
"And these were born to him (David) in Jerusalem; Shimea (heard; hearing; rumor) - and Shobab (return - returning - restore), and Nathan (given), and Solomon (peaceful), four, of Bathshua (daughter of an oath - daughter of abundant crying) the daughter of Ammiel (people of God):" -- AGI
The son who has two names, is the son who some Rabbis believed died shortly after his birth.
Shimea, means: Hear ye rumor - something heard - harkening, from the Hebrew root: "Hearing, i.e. Shema." The rumor was clear in Israel, Bathshua was with child by King David!
Then in II Sam 5:13-16 you have a clue to that death of this son by the name Shammuah - Sham-moo'-ah, which has the meaning of: A harkener, from the Hebrew root Shammah meaning: astonishment; desolation; loss; to make desolate, Strong's #8074.
But the name itself, really does not mean "desolate," it means: "Hearing." However the all important Hebrew root tells us something deeper about that hearing. This son was indeed destroyed by sin - sin leaves one desolate, so that loss is felt. Let us look at II Sam 12:18.
"And it came to pass on the seventh day (the Sabbath), that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?"
And in II Sam 5:13-16 we read:
"And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammuah (Shimea), and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.
Here is my Bank of Names for the Shemology in II Sam 5:13-16:
1. Shammuah - means: Hearing, from a Heb. root Shamem; translated as Alan said "desolate" 49 times
2. Shobab - means: Returning, Restored, from a Hebrew root Shuwv; translated "return" 391 x and the word "again" 248 x as you found
3. Nathan - means: Given of God, Giver, the root is translated "give" 1078 x.
4. Solomon - means: "Shalom - Peace" from the Hebrew root "Sha-lem - To make whole"
5. Ibhar - means: Whom God elects, from a Hebrew root bachar - which when it's translated can mean, "choose" 77 x; "chosen" 77 x; "choice" 6 x. Just as Alan found
6. Elishua - means: God is rich, God is Salvation, God of supplication
7. Nepheg - means: to take root, to sprout, bud, shoot forth, spring forth
8. Japhia - means: Splendid, Causing brightness, it's from a Hebrew root meaning: to shine, shine forth i.e. enlighten
9. Elishama - means: God the hearer, My God will hear, God has heard
10. Eliada - God knows or cares for - God has acknowledged, God is knowing
11. Eliphalet - God Delivers - God of Salvation - God the Savior - God of escape
I always try to list all the meaning I can find in the Bank of Names, it's the only correct way of doing Shemology. This way no one can say to you, it means something else. Doing this also makes for more then one understanding of the Shemology passage your working with. You could say, more Midrash.
Keeping in mind the two names for the first born son of David and Bathsheba. Now you could also read Alan's Shemology by using the two meaning of this first son, which, by the way is perfectly kosher to do:
"Hear this, the desolate shall return again to the Giver of Peace and choose God's Salvation. Taking root - enlighten, God has heard, God knows, and God will deliver." (words in italics are mine) BD
I told Alan that in his Shemology, "It shall Spring Forth and Enlighten them" was to long. To many words in the Shemology. It is always best to go with less words in making a Shemology (a pronouncement). Using just the names of these sons with only a few small translation words, is always a better to go. Not that Alan's is wrong, it not, it's just longer. Now I have only used 7 little words to make it clear. Alan has used 11 words in his, but both imply the same idea I think. I also went with the meaning of Nepheg as "to take root" rather then "spring forth" because it is placed first in Isaiah 27:3-6, which came into my mind by the Spirit.
"I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any should hurt it, I will keep it night and day. Anger is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together. Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me. He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and shoot forth (spring forth), and fill the face of the world with fruit."
This Scriptures fits the meaning of both Shemology very nicely, don’t you think?
Now for Alan's last point. It truly was of the LORD God, and it was most extraordinary. Clearly we can see the Triunity of God in this Shemology. You must always find Scripture, to back up your Shemology (your pronouncement) I believe. Remember: Messiah is the "Volume of the Book" - Psalm 40:7-8.
1. God (Elohim) Has Heard - Picture of the Father:
Gen. 21:17 And God (Elohim) heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God (Elohim) called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, "What is the matter with you, Hagar? Fear not; for God (Elohim) has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
Father God (Elohim) hears the voice of the outcast, a point well taken here. Also in Psalm 61:5 we read:
"For thou, O God (Elohim), has heard my vows: thou has given me the heritage of those that reverence (fear) Your Name."
2. God (Elohim) Knows - Picture of Holy Spirit:
Psalm 69:5 O God (Elohim), You know my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from Thee.
I Cor 2:10-11 But God (Elohim) has revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God (Elohim). For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God (Elohim) no man knows, but the Spirit of God (Elohim).
John 14:26 But the Comforter (Manacham), which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
What we see here is that only the Holy Spirit can reveal to us the mind of God (Elohim). He alone knows the mind of God (Elohim), for He is God (Elohim)!!!
Eze. 37:3 And He said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord (Adonay) GOD (Elohim), You know.
3. God (Elohim) Will Deliver - Picture of Yeshua Messiah:
Joshua 8: 7 Then you shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD (Yahvah) your God (Elohim) will deliver it into your hand.
Luke 9:42 While he was still approaching, the devil threw him (young man) down to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. And Yeshua rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him and gave him back to his father.
Deut 3:3 So the LORD (Yahvah) our God (Elohim) delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.
Judges 7:14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand has God (Elohim) delivered Midian, and all the host.
The Shemology Alan sent to me is very good. And with his permission he has allowed me to add to his understanding. I can clearly see the wonderful picture it paints. I pray all who read this article will see that "Shemology" is hidden prophecies in plain sight, in the in the Word of God.
"For there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word (Yeshua), and the Holy Spirit: and these three are EcahD (ONE)." I John 5:7
Every Shemology I have ever found in the Word of God, was by the leading of our LORD. Not all names in list's in the Bible make up understandable Shemologies. The one that we can understand, always seen to reveal Messiah. Some are so deep we will have to wait for Messiah Himself to reveal them to us.
A second email from Alan really got me excited. You know the more you keep on searching in the Word of God, the more you will find.
[Shalom Barbara:
My bank of names is still the same except for Shobab, whose root was "return" and "again" is also translated "Restore" 39 times. I felt "return again" was somewhat redundant as "return" implies something being done again. But the word "restore" caught my attention. So I changed my interpretation to "return and be restored" (as one thought) i.e "returned and restored". Also Japhia, i.e. "enlighten" I changed to "shine".
My changes are as follows:
"Hear this! The desolate returning shall be restored to the bestower (giver) of peace. Chosen of God, salvation shall spring forth (Is.61:10-11) and shine upon them i.e. the chosen of God" AR
Isaiah 60:1
"Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee."
In Hebrew Isaiah 60:1
"kumi ori ki va orech uch'vod Adonai alayich zarach".
The 3 "Eli's" at the end are still the same. The idea is that Israel will return to God, and the land, and be restored and saved. Is.45:17 / Jer.31:7-12, 31-34 / Acts 1:6 / Ro.11:26-27 etc. The idea is still the same, it's just being said a little differently. Let me know what you think.]
Well I think it dynamite Alan!
Alan has really given us the fullness (wholeness) of this Shemology. I am going to put the Scripture verses Alan gave above, down for us. I really want you to see the full impact of this Shemology. Please, take the time and read them.
Isaiah 61:10-11
"I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations."
Isaiah 45:17
"But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end."Jeremiah 31:7-12, 31-34
"For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither. They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock. For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he. Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all...Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the Covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my Covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the Covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."
Acts 1:6-7
"When they therefore were come together, they asked of Him (Yeshua), saying, Lord, will you at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And Yeshua said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own power."
Romans 11:26-27
"And so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB." "THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS."To recap this dynamite message given us from the names of David's children born in Yerushalayim. Alan and I believe it is a message of Hope for Israel. I asked Adah Guzman to also do this Shemology, this is her feelings as to how it could be read.
"Hear this (Israel), the desolate shall return again to the Giver of Shalom and choose God's Salvation (Yah saves - Yeshua). Taking root - enlighten, God has heard, God knows, and God will deliver (save Israel)." AGI
Her proof texts are:
"And so all Israel shall be saved (delivered) : as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the "Deliverer", and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob (Israel): For this is My Covenant unto them (Israel), when "I" shall take away their (Israel’s) sins." Romans 11:26-27 AGI
Rabbi Saul, Paul gives us the truth of Hebrew Scripture, which is found in Isaiah 59:20-21.
"And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob (Israel), saith the LORD. As for Me, this is My Covenant with them (those who turn), saith the LORD; My Spirit that is upon thee, and My Words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed (children), nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed (children's children), saith the LORD, from henceforth and forever." AGI
Need we say more! Let us pray:
"Father, we come to you in the Name above all names, Yeshua Messiahs'. We ask that you will reveal yourself to your people Israel. May they be healed. May you give then eye to see with, and ears to hear with. We bless you and KNOW that your Covenant with Israel is an everlasting Covenant. Praise your faithfulness. Praise your goodness. Praise your Holy Word, and Baruch HaShem Adonai Eloheinu, Melech Yisrael. Amen."
